The Rose Leaf Format
The Rose Leaf Ragtime Club meeting format is patterned after that of the old Maple Leaf Club. Each musicale begins at 1:00 PM and lasts approximately three hours. An emcee starts the ball rolling by playing a rag or two, then a succession of guest and member pianists take the stage and entertain the audience with one or two sets of tunes.
Admission to monthly meetings is by donation. Suggested donation is $2 or $3 per person. Performers are not asked to donate. In addition to live music, patrons are also treated to the various historical tidbits of information that each performer provides. Also covered is news and information on ragtime events taking place in southern California and around the world. Announcements are also made regarding musical recordings, tapes and compact discs, or any other ragtime-related merchandise that may be available through the Rose Leaf Club or other avenues. In addition, members can browse through our lending library of ragtime-related CDs, cassettes and video tapes. Managed by club member Phil Cannon, the library operates on the "honor system," which means members can check out their favorite music at the meeting and bring it back the next time.
Throughout the afternoon, food servers take your orders from the menu, so you can dine while appreciating the music.
Meetings are held on the last Sunday of each month, from 1:00 PM until about 4:00 PM in the Mayan Room Restaurant of the historic Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, CA.
The Aztec Hotel is located on Foothill Blvd. between Santa Anita Ave. and Myrtle Ave., just north of the Interstate 210 Freeway in Monrovia. The address is 311 W. Foothill Blvd. and the phone number is (626) 358-3231. Anyone interested in attending is invited to just "come on down" and be ready to be dazzled with three hours of live ragtime! If coming from the East (traveling westbound), exit at Myrtle Ave. Turn right (north) onto Myrtle, approximately one mile to Foothill Blvd. Turn left (West) onto Foothill Blvd. Aztec Hotel is 2/10 mile ahead on the right.
If coming from the West (traveling Eastbound), exit at Santa Anita Ave., go North 2/10 mile and turn right (East) onto Foothill Blvd. Aztec Hotel is about a mile and a half ahead on the left.
